The band is currently working on their second album and will be appearing at Tenby as a seven piece with their full horn section.

It will be a homecoming gig for guitarist Adrian Peregrine, who is originally from Tenby.

Mudlow

De Valence – Saturday 19th November 2022

Lurking along the UK’s south coast, Mudlow have been making trouble and music for over twenty years, playing globally renowned festivals such as USA’s Deep Blues and Muddy Roots Europe. Their good fortune has led them to play shows with household names such as Seasick Steve, The Detroit Cobras, and Alabama 3.

Mudlow’s musical world is populated with characters full of lament and thoroughly committed to their mistakes. Tobias (Guitar), Matt (Drums) and Paul (Bass) soundtrack these fables of misfortune with their distinctly scuzzy take on the blues.

Original and heartfelt, No other band sounds quite like Mudlow though the band’s love of Junior Kimborough, Tony Joe White, Jerry Reed and  Tom Waits is apparent throughout.

Mudlow’s third studio album and their definitive recording ‘Bad Turn’ was released this year on Whiskey Preachin’ Records. An album that is dark, dangerous and unashamedly funky.

They play the De Valence main stage on Saturday.

Sister Cookie

De Valence – Saturday 19th November 2022

From London via Lagos, charismatic chanteuse Sister Cookie and her band will take you on an eclectic excursion into the roots & fruits of black music.

Old sounds, new tricks. Sensuous, seductive and moody.

As well as possessing a distinctive voice that’s tender and sweet when it needs to be, she is a composer and self-taught pianist who writes honest and raw songs about pain, heartbreak, suffering – all that bad (meaning good) – stuff.

“The most original sound. Like Little Richard, Mark Ronson, Nina Simone and Nick Cave all got locked in a New Orleans speakeasy” – Record Store Day Unsigned Panel 2020.

“I just love this woman’s voice!” – Craig Charles, BBC 6Music.

“Wow, I mean what’s not to like about that? That is sensational! How groovy is that?! Mark Radcliffe, BBC 6Music.

“Her voice is stunning, powerful and unique, and her stage presence hits the back of the room at any venue she plays” DJ Anne Frankenstein, Jazz FM.

She plays the De Valence main stage on the Saturday.

following year, based on their immediate bond, unique style, and soulful
connection. We are so pleased to have them back performing this year on the Acoustic Stage.
As solo artists in their own right, both Jodie & Bella have worked with many well-respected musicians, including Andy Fairweather Low who had this to say about them –

Ben Tyzack

The Church House Acoustic Stage – Saturday 19th November 2022

‘A unique sound and absolutely thrilling playing from guitarist Ben Tyzack’
Orkney Blues Festival.

‘A gift for evocative songwriting’
Paul Jones – BBC Radio 2.

‘Hard picking sinuous baritone guitar and growling vocals’
Blues Revue – USA.

Born in London and raised in the deep south of the United States, Ben’s musical style reflects these experiences. His guitar playing is an intoxicating mix, combining the raw delta blues of Robert Johnson, the
Piedmont style of Reverend Gary Davis and the infectious bounce of Big Bill Broonzy. With this as a foundation he also brings in elements of New Orleans Jazz, Classical music and even drawing inspiration from his time playing rock music, blending in his love for the powerful soundscapes of Jimmy Page and David Gilmour. This combined with a soulful voice and commanding stage presence completes
the picture of a unique artist.

Ben plays the acoustic stage on the Saturday.

Kelvin Davies & Gary Jones

The Giltar Hotel – Saturday 19th November 2022

Kelvin Davies has an amazing portfolio of work including several plays on the BBC Radio 2 Cerys Matthews Blues Show. The great guitar work and singing of this young country blues artist brings songs of the 20s and 30s to life, as well as an increasing selection of self-penned numbers.

Kelvin draws his inspiration deep from the past, from blues pioneers such as Mississippi John Hurt, Charley Patton, Blind Blake, Reverend Gary Davis and more, as well as being inspired from later folk musicians, the likes of John Martyn, Jackson C Frank and Bob Dylan.

Rarely far from his side is veteran harmonica player Gary Jones, whose soulful, understated presence never fails to add an extra layer of sweetness to Kelvin’s overall wonderful, charismatic sound.

Kelvin & Gary play the Giltar Hotel Late Night Stage on the Saturday night/Sunday morning.

The Washboard Resonators

De Valence – Sunday 20th November 2022

Footstomping blues, ragtime, swing and folk music

The Washboard Resonators hail from Leeds & Llandeilo and can be described as sounding and looking like ‘a ragtime street band meets a Hollywood musical on a theatre stage somewhere in around 1932’.

Their favourite performers include the jazz, ragtime, hokum, blues, comedy and vaudeville sounds of Louis Armstrong, Blind Boy Fuller, Fred Astaire, The Washboard Rhythm Kings, Robert Johnson, Gene Krupa, Max Miller, George Formby, Tampa Red and The Memphis Jug Band.

Formed in 2014 they started out busking while playing together in blues trio Leeds City Stompers. Word spread and quickly the duo was in demand, playing many times per week.

During May of 2018 they travelled through the USA from New Orleans to Chicago for a vintage guitar and drum collectors event. While in Memphis they recorded at the legendary Sun Studios for their release ‘The Sun Sessions’, an EP of five hurriedly written original songs. Standing on an ‘X’ on the floor where Elvis, BB King, Jonny Cash and Roy Orbison had stood, they recorded into a Microphone used by Elvis.

Tenby Blues is pleased to welcome them back, this time to play the main stage, on the Sunday night.

Jimmy Carpenter

De Valence – Sunday 20th November 2022

American saxophonist Jimmy Carpenter is a Grammy winner and USA Blues Foundation ‘Best Instrumentalist 2021’ award winner.

“I have been a Jimmy Carpenter fan for 20 years, from the first time I heard him play with Jimmy Thackery. He’s always been one of the premier sax players around. But Jimmy is also a stellar songwriter and singer. His voice is at its best on ‘Soul Doctor’, Jimmy’s best record to date. This album oozes cool and rocks hard with a classic sound that only Jimmy Carpenter can bring to the table.”  — Mike Zito.

Jimmy Carpenter, saxophonist, singer-songwriter, and arranger, began his musical journey over 35 years ago. In the ’80s, he toured the east coast with the renegade blues band, The Alka-Phonics, in the ’90s with the blues-rock band The Believers and over the years Jimmy has toured internationally with Tinsley Ellis, Jimmy Thackery, Walter Wolfman Washington, Eric Lindell, and others.

In 2012 Jimmy joined Mike Zito, his long-time friend and musical cohort, and recorded and toured as a member of Mike Zito and the Wheel. In addition to touring nationally & internationally, Jimmy has written, arranged and recorded the horns for many artists, and has gained a reputation as a master Blues, Rock-n-Roll and R&B saxophonist.

Jimmy has also released several solo albums including Toiling in Obscurity, Walk Away, Jimmy Carpenter Plays the Blues, and Soul Doctor. In addition to leading his own band and playing with numerous others, he is the Musical Director for the Big Blues Bender, and leader of the Bender Brass, The Bender’s house band.

We are pleased Jimmy is bringing his sensational, soulful, rocking show to headline the Sunday night of our Festival.
