A word from our President
Recently I heard Howling Wolf’s ‘Spoonful’ played on internet radio. It took me back 50 years to when every band in Britain who was anybody, was covering this song; later to be honoured in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame top 500 songs, that shaped Rock and Roll.
Wolf had three songs in there, the others being ‘Little Red Rooster’ (the Rolling Stones cover being the only blues song ever to make number one in the pop charts), and ‘Smokestack Lightning’ (remember the Levi jeans Ad?).
Blues is my music. Always was, always will be. Eight years ago, three lads of like mind, Chris Osbourne, Declan Connolly and Malcolm Cawley talked about staging their own Blues Festival. Because of their efforts and dedication, the Tenby Blues Festival is now in its 9th year. Great music on a stunning stage, a holiday with Blues, what could be better! ‘Just a little spoon of that precious stuff, satisfies my soul’.
Pat will be fronting his own band, the Hawks, on the De Valence stage on Saturday evening, supporting the Mark Pontin Group, and Andy Fairweather Low and the Low Riders. On Sunday he will make another appearance, at the closing concert in the Rugby Club, as the washboard player with the Mardi Jug Band.
Tenby Blues Festival is sad to hear of the passing of legendary Cardiff bluesman Cal Newman. He was a wonderful chap and a very talented performer who had a huge influence on the blues and acoustic scene in south Wales. Our condolences to his family and friends.
